Tips to Save Money when Planning a Wedding

Tips to Save Money when Planning a Wedding

Once you are engaged, it is time to begin preparing for the wild adventure of planning your wedding. There is a lot to prepare and this can become stressful depending on the date of your wedding. If you are working with a tight budget, it is still possible to have an amazing celebration. After some extensive research, it is now time to begin planning this special celebration. Although I am still planning my wedding, I would like to share a few tips that I have learned during my planning process so far.

If you are creative, I recommended designing the invitations yourself. There are benefits to creating your own invitations, which make the time spent worthwhile. I personally did not enjoy shopping for invitations because there were too many styles available. These styles consist of different themes, colors, and designs. When creating the invitations yourself, this process is simplified significantly. This allows you to have full control over what the invitations look like and you can create something that will be remembered well past your wedding day.

After deciding on a design for my invitations, I decided that it was time to begin shopping for shoes. My goal was to find an affordable pair of shoes that could be worn more than once. Most shoes that I found were a color that I was not happy with because they did not match any of the dresses in my wardrobe. This really concerned me because I do not like purchasing something that will not get much use.

I soon discovered dyeable shoes and these were perfect because you can easily change their color. This allows you to wear them many times. I am planning to wear these shoes for many special events after my wedding. There are many different shoes available to choose from, but these dyeable shoes seemed to fit my requirements best. I still have a lot of planning to do for my wedding, but overall, I am satisfied with what my fiancé and I have chosen so far.

One of our favorite parts of Indianapolis is Massachusetts Avenue in Downtown. We love the unique shops & boutiques as well as the Starbucks that always seems to be packed. During our last visit to “Mass Ave” we realized that there were a lot of great places for Indianapolis brides! So, we are going to start a series of posts highlighting locations on Mass Ave that you should check out as you plan your Indianapolis Wedding! “Plan your Wedding w/ Mass Ave Flavor”

The first stop on our journey of Mass Ave is… Silver in the City.

Silver in the City is a chic little store with lots of great jewelery & gifts!  A good portion of the jewelery is made by local designers from the Indianapolis area.  The jewelery is very affordable as it ranges from $35 to $100.  It would be a great place to do some shopping for your bridesmaids gifts!  The staff at Silver in the City are well connected to the local Indianapolis jewelery designers, so if you find a piece you like and need 8 of them… they can make it happen!  Or, if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind handmade necklace they can connect you with the right person.  The knowledgeable staff is well versed in dealing with Indianapolis brides that are looking for the perfect piece of jewelery.

The store is basically divided into two sections Jewelery & Gifts!

The gift section also has a lot of great things to help you plan your Indianapolis wedding!  The store is packed with “nifty gifties” (sorry, that was an obscure reference from the Office) But seriously, they have some of the coolest designed gifts in that store.  If you’re looking for a wine rack that can hang from your ceiling or one of those clocks with no numbers – this is your place!  Their book collection is a must-have for bachelorette parties & fun gifts for your bridal showers!  If you’re from out of town or don’t have an opportunity to make it down to the store… you can find some great Bachelorette Party resources on our IWB Amazon Store!

Yoga Bride: Getting in Shape for your Wedding
Guest Post by: Heather Heininger an Indianapolis Bride

You roll out your mat and sit down, crossing your legs. Class is beginning. You close your eyes and try to relax, shutting out the world around you, as the instructor informs you to only think, “I am breathing in. I am breathing out.” Sounds strange, doesn’t it? That’s exactly what I thought until I began to soothe out my struggles: stress from wedding planning and weight gain. My muscles were tense, my heart pounding, and my blood pressure rising. Not to mention a temper that was growing shorter with each passing frustration. I had to do something. I looked into the avenues of working out at a gym, but always felt belittled by those completely toned women running effortlessly on the treadmills for what seemed to be hours. What was I going to do? I needed to put the stress and frustrations of the wedding and my weight gain in check. I needed something. I found Yoga.

Through my internet searches, I stumbled across a small Yoga boutique on the South side of Indianapolis. I called the instructor with questions to learn more about Yoga and its multitude of assets to the mind and body. Most of us have heard of it, but do we all really understand it? I, for one, did not. I had only viewed it as strange contortions of the body that hurt to even think about. However, I finally worked up the nerve to show up for a beginner’s Hatha class and an hour later I was back to being my happy-go-lucky self. I was at ease and was able to let the stress of wedding planning brush past me.

Now, weeks later, I have noticed not only a change in my mental attitude toward life and wedding planning, but also a physical difference. Pounds are dropping off making that dream dress even more of a realistic achievement. I feel more refreshed in the morning and ready to jump head-first into the wedding planning again.

Yoga is more than just a stress reliever or weight loss program. It’s something to focus on that won’t hurt me if I practice properly. This workout of contortions can only help and strengthen me, clear my mind, and allow me to calm down instead of whipping up into a fury. It has allowed me to make it thus far in my wedding planning without a hitch.

Five Reasons You Should Make a Wedding Website

Five Reasons You Should Make a Wedding Website
Guest Post by: Geoff Evason from Momentville

Making a wedding website can be both fun and very useful for your wedding.  For couples who haven’t yet made their own wedding website we’d like to point out 5 great reasons to consider making one.

First, a wedding website is very useful for sharing wedding information with your guests.  By adding the details of your wedding you can use your wedding website as a central spot for information about your wedding.  Letting your guests easily find all the relevant information in one place makes things easier for everyone.  This is especially true for destination weddings and out of town guests.

Second, a wedding website is a great way for communicating updates with your guests.  Some of the newer wedding websites allow your guests to subscribe to updates you make.  This makes your website a handy ongoing communication tool and allows you to feel confident that your guests are hearing about updates.  If a wedding website provider offers RSS feeds then you can even share your updates on social networking sites like Facebook.

Third, wedding websites can be great for helping you plan your wedding.  Many wedding websites include electronic invites, electronic RSVPs, and guest/meal tracking features.  This makes it a snap to keep track of who has/hasn’t RSVPed, who is coming, and how many of each type of meal has been requested.

Fourth, you can use your wedding website to interact with your guests before and after the wedding.  If you add a wedding blog to your website, everyone can read about how the planning is coming along.  You can use interactive features such as guest books to ask for music requests.  That is a great way to make sure everyone gets to hear some music that they like, and helps everyone feel more involved. After the wedding, you can get your guests to upload their photos of your event so you can get all the best shots.

Fifth, a wedding website can help you preserve your memories.  After the event is finished, you can add photos from your special day.  In the future you can then look back at your website and remember how magical your wedding was and have all the details, planning info, and photos available to see.  Unfortunately, many wedding website providers offer websites that expire after one year.  Your memories don’t expire, why should your website?

There are many other reasons you might consider making your own wedding website.  Above we highlighted the top 5 reasons that were important to us in building MomentVille.  MomentVille.com offers an easy, fun, and free way to build your own wedding website that never expires.  Our goal is to help people plan, share, and remember life’s special moments.

Wedding Traditions: Seeing One Another Before the Ceremony

Wedding Traditions:  Seeing One Another Before the Ceremony
Guest Post by: John Knowles from Times to Remember Photography

Weddings, regardless of where in the world they take place, are full of ceremony, custom, and tradition.  They are the things that connect us to the past, and provide us with a link to something that remains the same as other things change over the ages.  While planning their wedding, a couple will face many decisions regarding these traditions.  One decision that is sure to cause a great deal of debate and discussion is whether the bride and groom will see one another before the ceremony.

So where did this tradition come from in the first place?  It’s based on an ancient Roman practice of arranged marriages.  Weddings were often arranged by the families of the bride and groom for financial or political gain.  The couple was rarely involved in the planning of the wedding, and would often not even know one another.

Since both families had a great deal to loose, the groom was not allowed to see the bride before the marriage for fear that he would refuse to marry if he didn’t like how the bride looked.  The bride was veiled from head to toe on her wedding day, and only after the wedding ceremony was complete was the groom allowed to see her for the first time.  As time passed, this practice turned into tradition, and superstition crept into the mix.  Even to this day, many consider it bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding.

There is nothing wrong with the decision to keep with tradition.  Many couples feel that it adds to the excitement and anticipation of the wedding day.  They look forward to seeing one another for the first time as the bride is escorted down the aisle by her father.

For those who wish to forgo tradition, there are some wonderful opportunities to create a special memory and help your wedding day run much smoother.  A very popular option is to have a private meeting.  This gives the couple a few minutes alone together, usually five to fifteen minutes, to really get a good look at each other, talk, and exchange gifts.  The thrill of seeing one another for the first time is still there, and it’s a more intimate moment that they will remember forever.  This meeting can put both bride and groom at ease and eliminate some stress about what is going to happen.  It may also be the only private time the couple may get the whole day.

Seeing one another before the ceremony also allows the couple the opportunity to complete all the formal photography.  Photos will look great because everyone is fresh and ready to go.  Nobody has had a chance to get gowns or tuxedos dirty, wrinkled, or torn.  All the makeup, hair, and flowers are still perfect, and any children in the wedding party haven’t worn out yet.  Since all the photos will be done early, the couple will be able to move directly to the reception after the wedding.  You will be able to take off in the limo and not have to come right back for photos.  This translates into more time to spend greeting and speaking with guests during the cocktail hour.  Your guests will appreciate not having to wait while you are still back at the church taking pictures.

As a wedding photographer, I see couples struggle with the decision to see one another all the time.  I will often council the couple and provide advice to help them make a choice, but ultimately it is the couple’s decision.  They should make the choice that fits their family traditions, personalities, and style.

Indianapolis Monthly Bridal Show

Yep, it’s Bridal Show season!  On Sunday, January 11th 2009 we stopped by the Ritz Charles in Carmel to spend some time at the Indianapolis Monthly Bridal Show. This is not your typical Bridal Show!  There were Ritz Charles staff members walking around serving hor’orderves & champagne!  Andrea & I thought that was a really nice touch!  The entire event was held in one large room… this made it really easy to walk around and see every wedding vendor!  It was great to see some familiar faces like the always friendly people at DC Designers Tux!  Overall, the event was really well organized and the staff was very friendly!  We met many vendors for the first time and got quite a few Vendor Highlight videos to share over the next few months!

Here are a few pictures we took @ the Bridal Show…
